Fantasy books have become exceedingly popular in recent years, with authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien and George R.R. Martin becoming household names. There are, however, a plethora of other fantasy works that have not gotten the respect they deserve. To be honest, I haven't read any of the five novels we'll be discussing and just came across them when researching for this post. I will, however, definitely give them a try now. Keep an eye out for prospective book talks in the near future! Nonetheless, based on my study, these five novels combine interesting universes, rich characters, and riveting plots that are equally as entertaining as their more well-known counterparts. Now, let's take a look at the five underappreciated fantasy books that you (and I) should read as soon as possible.
"The Warded Man" by Peter V. Brett
The first novel in the "Demon Cycle" series, "The Warded Man," recounts the adventures of three main characters as they struggle to survive in a world overrun by demons. People must dwell in fortified cities and towns with wards—magical symbols that defend them against demon attacks—because demons only emerge at night and are drawn to sources of light. In the course of defending their loved ones from unspeakable evils, the heroes of the book confront themes of fear, faith, and the human spirit. The characters have been well-developed and are realistic, and the world-building is excellent. The Warded Man is a must-read if dark fantasy is your thing.
"The Emperor's Blades" by Brian Staveley
The first book in the "Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne" trilogy, "The Emperor's Blades," is an exciting tale of political intrigue and magical enchantment. As you journey with the three children of the Emperor of Annur, you get drawn into their lives and their environment. With the complex magic system, you will discover a world that is both familiar and foreign, where ancient powers and secrets are concealed everywhere. The Emperor's Blades is distinguished by its depth of character. Everyone is flawed and empathetic as they navigate the politics of their realm. You will both cheer for and cry for them as they develop and mature throughout the story. This unique journey will leave you breathless and wanting more. This book is required reading for genre enthusiasts and thrill-seekers.
"The Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch
You will be transported to a wonderfully enigmatic universe by "The Lies of Locke Lamora." The book describes a corrupt, thieving society in a medieval metropolis reminiscent of Venice. Locke Lamora is a delightful main character. He has always been a crook and scam artist. But, as the novel goes on, his story exposes more and more of his background and intentions. The world Scott Lynch paints with masterful strokes is rich and intricate. From the city's winding canals to towering palaces to its murky criminal underworld, every detail is meticulously crafted to immerse you in the drama. The cast of "The Lies of Locke Lamora" is distinctive. Each of Locke's accomplices and the powerful individuals they target have particular personalities and histories. As you follow their exploits and relationships, you will root for them and feel their triumphs and failures.
"The Traitor Baru Cormorant" by Seth Dickinson
The novel "The Traitor Baru Cormorant" focuses on Baru Cormorant, a young woman whose homeland was attacked and captured by an empire when she was a child. As she ascends inside this realm, Baru must confront her problems and navigate the perilous politics of her new home. She desires to exact revenge and free her people in secret. While Baru balances her own desires with those of others, identity, loyalty, and power are discussed in depth. Follow her into a world dominated by politics and power, where nothing is as it seems. The world-building of "The Traitor Baru Cormorant" is said to be outstanding. The author describes a civilisation that is both beautiful and dreadful, where virtue and evil are often times confused. Each character is intricate and well-developed, facing their own demons and desires. The conclusion of the story, it is said, will leave you wanting more, unable to forget it, which is why it is on the top of my reading list for summer 2023.
There are several underappreciated fantasy works simply waiting to be found. These five novels will likely fascinate you with their beautifully created worlds, intriguing characters, and engrossing plots, regardless of your familiarity with the genre. Prepare to be transported to an entirely new world of imagination and adventure by picking up one of these novels. I myself shall begin with "The Traitor Baru Cormorant." Have fun reading!
