As a more than avid reader of fantasy books, I am often asked for my recommendations on what books to read. It can be overwhelming trying to navigate through the vast selection of fantasy novels out there, so I have compiled a list of the 10 must-read fantasy books of all time. These books have stood the test of time, and have captivated readers for decades. So, without further ado, here are my top 10 must-read fantasy books of all time.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien

No list of must-read fantasy books would be complete without mentioning The Lord of the Rings. So, of course, I am going to start with it. This epic trilogy follows the journey of Frodo Baggins and his companions as they attempt to destroy the One Ring and defeat the Dark Lord Sauron. The rich world-building, complex characters, and vivid descriptions make this trilogy a true masterpiece. Tolkien's attention to detail is unparalleled, creating a fully-realized world that readers can get lost in. The themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the struggle between good and evil make this trilogy a timeless classic that has inspired countless other works in the fantasy genre. As someone who has read The Lord of the Rings multiple times, I can attest to its lasting appeal and the joy of discovering new details with each reread.

A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin

The A Song of Ice and Fire series, popularized by the hit TV show Game of Thrones, is a sprawling epic that takes place in a richly-detailed world of political intrigue, war, and magic. Martin's attention to detail and character development are masterful, and readers will find themselves invested in the fates of the characters as they navigate the complex political landscape of Westeros. The themes of power, family, and loyalty make this series a must-read for any fan of the fantasy genre. I was immediately drawn into this world of intrigue and found myself rooting for certain characters while despising others. And, despite the mixed feelings I personaly harbour for the way the tv series ended, I have gone and will proobably many times go back to the books to dive into the stunning world Georg R.R. Martin created for us.

The Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin

Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle is, in my opinion, a masterful work of fantasy that has captivated readers since the first book's publication in 1968. The series is set in a world of magic and dragons, where the power of words and names holds great significance (strange, why do I resonate with that?). Le Guin's writing is poetic and profound, exploring evergreen themes of power, identity, and the human condition with not only a deft, but masterful hand.

At the heart of the Earthsea Cycle is the character of Ged, a powerful wizard who must come to terms with his own weaknesses and fears in order to save the world from destruction. Ged's journey is a deeply personal one, and readers will find themselves invested in his struggles and triumphs.

The world of Earthsea is complex and detailed, with a rich history and mythology that adds depth to the story. Le Guin has created a world that is both fantastical and grounded in a sense of reality, making it feel both otherworldly and familiar.

What sets the Earthsea Cycle apart from other, maybe more entertainment focussed, fantasy series is its exploration of complex themes.

But what I felt makes the Earthsea Cycle a true must-read for true fantasy fans is its masterful world-building and beautiful prose. Le Guin's writing is evocative and lyrical, transporting readers tenderl into a world of magic and wonder. The series is a true masterpiece of the genre, and its influence can be seen in the work of many contemporary fantasy writers (including probably yours truly).

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Another absolutely classic series, The Chronicles of Narnia, is one of the most beloved and enduring fantasy series of all time. Written by C.S. Lewis (a close friend of J.R.R Tolkien, by the way), the series follows the adventures of a group of children who stumble upon a magical world called Narnia. Each book in the series takes the reader on a new adventure through this fantastical world, filled with talking animals, mythical creatures, and epic battles between good and evil. While some of the books, like the famous "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" take please partly in our own world, others play out completely in C.S Lewis' fantasy realm, only hinting at the existence of another reality.

What sets The Chronicles of Narnia apart from other fantasy series is its allegorical themes. Lewis, a devout Christian, infused the series heavily with symbolism and themes of faith, redemption, and courage. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the first book in the series, can be interpreted as a retelling of the story of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, with the character of Aslan the lion serving as a Christ figure.

But the themes of The Chronicles of Narnia are not limited to Christian allegory only. The series also explores the nature of good and evil, the power of imagination, and the importance of family and friendship. The many loveable characters are well-developed and relatable (many of them even experiencing an entire arc of development), and readers will find themselves invested in their struggles and triumphs.

As a child, I have fond memories of reading The Chronicles of Narnia. The magical world of Narnia captivated me, and I was deeply inspired by the bravery and courage of the characters. As an adult, I have continued to revisit the series, and I have found new meaning and depth in its themes and messages.
